A landmark 1,600-kilometre electric vehicle (EV) road trip is scheduled to begin this Sunday, setting the stage for what is being described as Africa’s first-ever cross-border EV convoy.
The six-day expedition, known as the Road to Addis, will set off from Nairobi on October 5 and wind through Kenyan and Ethiopian towns before arriving in Addis Ababa on October 10. The timing coincides with preparations for Africa E-Mobility Week, to be hosted by UNECA and UNEP between October 14 and 16.

The initiative is spearheaded by Munja Group in collaboration with House of Procurement (HOP), with backing from Kenya Power, Kenya’s Ministry of Roads and Transport, Ethiopia’s Ministry of Transport and Logistics, the Cars Society of Africa, and Eazy Power PLC.
To make the trip possible, temporary charging stations will be installed along the route. These will not only power the convoy but also demonstrate the practicality of EV travel across borders. Organisers say the convoy is designed to encourage dialogue around sustainable transport corridors, innovative EV leasing models, and carbon credits as potential financing mechanisms for wider adoption.
Kenya Power’s Managing Director and CEO, Dr. Eng. Joseph Siror highlighted the importance of regional cooperation in advancing e-mobility. He noted that Kenya has already registered more than 6,400 EVs and is actively working to expand charging infrastructure. “E-mobility must extend beyond national borders, and seamless cross-border movement is essential,” Siror said.
The Road to Addis is expected to be more than just a symbolic drive—it. It aims to showcase the promise and realities of electric mobility in Africa. From infrastructure gaps to financing opportunities, the journey will shed light on what it will take for the continent to embrace the global transition to cleaner transport.
